Definition

Realized Cap calculates the total value of all coins based on the price at which they last transacted on-chain, rather than the current market price.

Unlike Market Cap, which values all circulating coins at the current price, Realized Cap reflects the historical cost basis of each coin.

Why It Matters

  • Reflects Investor Cost Basis: Approximates total capital invested.
  • Smoother Valuation: Less volatile than market cap.
  • Identifies Market Cycles: Relationship between Market Cap and Realized Cap signals tops and bottoms.
  • Highlights Profit/Loss: Market Cap > Realized Cap → aggregate profit.
  • Discounts Lost Coins: Stagnant coins are valued at last movement price.

How It Works

  1. Identify all coins in circulation.
  2. Determine the price at last movement.
  3. Sum those values to calculate total Realized Cap.

This creates a network-wide cost basis.

Example

Three coins:

  • Coin A last moved at $100
  • Coin B last moved at $200
  • Coin C last moved at $50

Current price: $150

Market Cap = 3 × $150 = $450

Realized Cap = 100 + 200 + 50 = $350

Since Realized Cap < Market Cap → aggregate profit.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing it with Market Cap
  • Ignoring context
  • Applying uniformly across blockchains
  • Treating absolute value as most important

Quick Checklist

  • Understand it as cost-basis valuation
  • Compare to Market Cap
  • Use it for cycle analysis
  • Focus on trends, not raw numbers

FAQs

  • Primary difference from Market Cap?
  • Market Cap uses current price; Realized Cap uses last movement price.
  • Why is it more stable?
  • It only changes when coins move on-chain.
  • How does it identify bottoms?
  • When Market Cap falls below Realized Cap, markets are often near cycle lows.
  • Does it account for lost coins?
  • Yes.
  • Who introduced it?
  • Coin Metrics.
